Hosted by Baldwin City Public Library and Santa Fe Trail Historical Society of Douglas County
Alan Van Loenen, Battery B, 3rd Kansas, Light Artillery, Reenactment Unit, will be bringing American Civil War uniforms and equipment to display and describe. These items are mostly reproductions, but are exact reproductions like those used during the American Civil War, 1861- 1865. He will also have a couple of reproduction Civil War weapons for part of his program.
We will also display an Underground Railroad Quilt started by Sharon Andrews, then donated by her family to the Quilt Capital of Kansas group. Eileen Flory offered to complete the sashing of the quilt blocks for this project. In May of 2023, the QCKS group and Lumberyard Art Center partnered and received a grant from the Douglas County Heritage organization. Their goal is to teach youth classes about the techniques of the past in the textile arts, as schools have not taught these arts for some time. They decided to complete this project by hand-quilting the piece, as this is the traditional method of putting the quilt together. They had some youth and adults help with hand quilting. The patterns for each quilt block were from the book “Underground Railroad Sampler” by Eleanor Burns and Sue Bouchard.
