Overview:

The Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce is seeking a highly motivated, results oriented Executive Director to grow a member-based nonprofit organization. The Executive director is responsible for all business operations of the Chamber and is the spokesperson of the Chamber. The Executive Director must be an effective organizer, interact well in a dynamic environment, be a solid team builder with proven leadership skills, and also have excellent communication, strategy, analytical, and personal skills. The Executive Director will partner with the board of directors to develop and implement plans that provide measurable value to the community and members of the Chamber and also maintain goals established by the organization.

Position Description:  Executive Director

General Description of Job: To assist in developing, establishing and maintaining Chamber strategies to meet strategic goals and objectives. To develop, lead and manage the implementation on a daily basis. The primary directive of the Executive Director is to serve the membership by leading the growth and development of the Baldwin City Chamber as well as the implementation of programs necessary to achieve the mission of the Chamber. The Executive Director is responsible for providing highly visible leadership in the community and building upon the Chamber’s strong reputation in all issues related to the regional economy and community vitality. The Executive Director has overall responsibility for member development/service; community engagement/advocacy; economic development partner; marketing; management of operations/administration, finance, staff/volunteer leadership; strategic planning; and oversight of all Board‐directed initiatives. The Executive Director is the key representative and advocate for business owners and employers in the Baldwin City area, with the goal of promoting and strengthening the community by building prosperity through a healthy economy and a strong business sector.

Reports to: Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce Board

Primary duties, tasks and responsibilities:

  • Manage all activities required in support of the Chamber
  • Assist board members in their assigned duties as requested
  • Assist in developing membership plan and philosophy in support of the Chamber strategic plan
  • Be the face of the Chamber
  • Listen to the needs of the business community
  • Assist in tourism as it aids in Chamber goals (relocating new businesses, fundraising events)
  • Lead, coordinate and manage volunteers and staff
  • Communicate with community leaders and follow through with membership benefits
  • Developing a cultivation and recruitment strategy
  • Open communication and partnership with the City of Baldwin, Baldwin City Recreation Center, Baldwin City Economic Development Corporation, Baker University, Baldwin City School District and Douglas County
  • Assist in the development and manage branding plan that upholds the current Chamber image
  • Monitor industry best practices and incorporate as appropriate
  • Direct people to the appropriate resources and maintain website with resource lists
  • Monitor, review and report on all Chamber activities to the board and partners as appropriate
  • Analysis of member research, current market conditions and shared resource information
  • Assist and implement best practices for marketing and finance
  • Create reports and maintenance of records
  • Expand or redesign and develop membership platforms including social media, traditional advertising, press releases, promotions, branding and direct marketing to evolve with the needs of current members
  • Follow By-laws and Policies
  • Management duties and perform annual performance reviews, development and coaching of team members
  • Assist and manage the budget
  • Create event committees for key signature events identified
  • Identify opportunities for sponsorships
  • Conduct membership surveys and visits
  • Planning and implementing educational workshops
  • Follow regulations according to federal, state, county, city law and requirements of 501(c) regulations

Requirements and skill needed for the position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in community leadership or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in similar position
  • Management or supervisory experience
  • Basic financial analysis skills
  • Ability to make sound business and community decisions
  • Strong proficiency writing and editing effective marketing content
  • Event planning experience
  • Ability and confidence to effectively critique and guide development of effective and professional graphics design
  • Advanced computer proficiency
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a team
  • Ability to manage projects and personnel
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Detailed oriented yet efficient
  • Ability to occasionally travel
  • Ability to learn and communicate technical and mechanical product details and concepts
  • Social media marketing development and experience

Additional skills that are helpful but not required:

  • Grant writing experience
  • Negotiation skills
