German Pastors Visit St. John’s United Church of Christ

On Monday, February 4, St. John’s United Church of Christ (396 E 900th Rd, Baldwin City, KS 66006) welcomed five pastors from Baden, Germany and three pastors from towns in Kansas to Baldwin.  We had a great day of touring, learning and eating!

St. John’s is a member of the Kansas Oklahoma Conference of the United Church of Christ (KOUCC), which has a long-time partnership with the Evangelical Church in Baden.  The German pastors came to learn more about the identity of the KOUCC, to deepen the relationships within our partnership, and expose our partners to the culture (both in and out of church) of the United States.

We started our day in Baldwin, eating lunch at the Homestead Cafe.  It was wonderful, of course. We then traveled to the home of Ruth Stoebener, our church historian, whose family has farmed in the area for 99 years.  She talked to pastors about the history of St. John’s. She told them how the first congregants came from Germany more than 150 years ago. And the many ways, how, despite all the changes our church has seen, we are still going strong.

We then traveled to St. John’s Church, where the visiting pastors saw our lovely sanctuary and were very interested in our historic Bible printed in German.  Over tea in the church basement, there was a long discussion about our respective work in ministry, its challenges and its blessings.

It was a great day for all involved.  St. John’s is thankful to have hosted these German pastors, and for the learning and friendship that happened.  And St. John’s would like to let the Baldwin community know that wherever you are on life’s journey, you are always welcome at St. John’s UCC.
