The Epic Vision Eye Center Story
Epic Vision Eye Center’s goal is to provide the highest quality of caring, medical eye care for patients and their families in a positive and professional environment.
Epic Vision’s owner, Dr. Ryan Hiesterman, grew up in the small town of Washington, KS. He attended Kansas State University before completing his Doctorate of Optometry degree at the Oklahoma College of Optometry in 2003. Dr. Hiesterman started his own optometry practice in Clay Center, KS in 2004 after he and his wife chose to move back closer to their families. As the practice grew, Dr. Hiesterman faced similar struggles that all private practice medical professionals were facing; specifically navigating the increasing cost and difficulties of the health care laws and insurance changes. He also observed the lack of new young Drs coming out of school who were interested in taking over ownership of practices whose Doctors were approaching retirement, mostly due to these increasing challenges in health care and the rising costs of pursuing a professional doctorate degree education. This lack of interest from new young Doctors was especially common in more rural areas. Epic Vision was formed in 2013 as a business model that created a backbone of support for small optometry offices. This support helps individual offices handle the increasing difficulties in the health care system and serves to attract Doctors to these rural practices that may have otherwise been forced to close. Being from small town Kansas, Dr. Hiesterman is passionate about rural areas continuing to have convenient access to quality medical eye care. We currently have 9 locations of which 6 are located in smaller rural towns. Of the 9 locations, 8 of the optometrists are Kansas natives.
Dr. Tad Baker, who serves the Baldwin City office, grew up just outside of Topeka in the small town of Berryton, KS. He attended Fort Hays State University where he ran track and cross country and received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. Dr. Baker received his Doctorate degree in Optometry from the University of Missouri in St. Louis where he graduated with honors in 1997. Dr. Baker comes to us with nearly 20 years of experience in a multi location private practice in Wichita, Kansas. Dr. Baker is experienced in the treatment and management of ocular disease including the treatment of glaucoma, conjunctivitis and diseases of the eye and its related tissues. He has also completed post graduate courses from Pacific University in systemic pharmacological treatment of eye diseases, as well as post-graduate courses in diabetes, glaucoma and laser vision correction. Dr. Baker is an active member of the American Optometric Association, Kansas Eye Care Services, and Beta Sigma Kappa Honorary Academic Society. He also serves in the United States Air Force, Kansas Air National Guard. Lieutenant Colonel Baker serves with the 190th Air Refueling Wing at Forbes Field in Topeka where he assists the pilots and members of the 190th with their eye care. Lieutenant Colonel Baker was recently named the Air Force medical services National Optometrist of the year for the Air National Guard. Dr. Baker and his wife Dr. Andrea Baker have two children, Brock and Camden. Epic Vision is proud of Dr Baker’s service as well as the level of care he provides his patients.

Plans for the future?
Our Baldwin City office is currently scheduling patient eye exams with Dr. Baker 2 days a week, but is staffed 5 days a week. We have convenient appointment times to accommodate kids after school as well as evening appointments available so patients do not have to take off work. Having the office staffed every day allows convenient access for those glasses emergencies or the ability to shop and purchase a new pair of glasses, or sunglasses, any day of the week. We plan to add additional Doctor days to the weekly schedule as patient demand increases. Our hope is to serve the Baldwin City community’s eye care needs for years to come!
