Many organizations strive to engage citizens of the Baldwin City community. The Baldwin City Recreation Commission and the Baldwin City Chamber have partnered to create the Senior Engagement Coordinating Council (SECC). The SECC meets on a monthly basis to work on improving quality of life for Baldwin City Seniors (Individuals 55 & older residing within USD 348 boundaries). Here are some of our recent activities:
- Tech Class – Two tech classes were held at the Baldwin City Recreation Commission offices. Seniors were asked to bring their own tech devices and a topic or problem they needed assistance with. Volunteers helped these seniors navigate their smart phones, laptops, and tablets. Seniors learned about such topics as internet security, listening to music, and using online maps. Special thanks goes out to all volunteers: Kaitlynn Flowers, Sean Hare, Whitney Hilman, Tammy Michael.
- CHAMPSS Meals – The Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging has partnered with the Dance Cafe to offer CHAMPSS meals (Choosing Healthy Appetizing Meal Plan Solutions for Seniors). These lunch meals are served Mon-Fri. 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. You must have a CHAMPSS card to participate. Please contact Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging for more information. (785) 235-1367, or (800) 798-1366.
- Operation Red File – Operation Red File is a medical information initiative sponsored by the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services. The Red File is designed to help seniors keep their critical health information accessible if needed in an emergency. Seniors can place the large red magnetic files on their refrigerators where first responders will know to look for it.
The next SECC meeting is June 19th at 1pm at the Baldwin Public Library. Contact Debra at the Rec Center at 594-3670 if you have questions.
