When it comes to supporting Baldwin City’s public library, the Friends of the Baldwin City Library organization has always been there to lend a helping hand. In fact, in 1992, when the library moved from the old city hall building on 8th Street to its current location at 800 7th Street, the Friends of the Baldwin City Library provided a whole chain of helping hands. Organizing a line of helpers that stretched down High Street, the Friends passed books hand to hand, bucket brigade style, to move the library’s collection safely into its new home.
Longtime children’s librarian and story time lady Becky McMillen started the Friends of the Baldwin City Library organization in the late 1980s, and the group has established several events and fund raisers that have become community traditions, including their annual Mum and Plant Sales and the City Wide Garage Sale. The Friends help provide funding and support for the library’s popular Summer Reading Program, organize Book Talks for adults, and award a scholarship to a Baldwin High School senior each year.
As Friends of the Baldwin City Library board member Anne Walker puts it, “We organize projects to benefit the community, and keep raising money to fill needs.” This sometimes means buying new furniture for the library, or providing access to technology as well as thinking outside the box, as when the Friends helped create the Seed Lending Library, where patrons can access and exchange seeds for flowers and vegetables.
Being members of the Chamber has “helped pull people together,” says Friends board member and volunteer Emily Malin. “If you operate in a vacuum, you will run short on participants. Being part of the Chamber brings an awareness of what’s going on in the community and how you can support it.”
If you’d like to lend your set of helping hands, join the Friends as an individual member or business partner. They are a wonderful example of all that can be accomplished when we work together!
